Fans of The Lord of the Rings series will recognize Stormcrow as one of Gandalf's nicknames, a reference to the perception that he only shows up when trouble is afoot, a harbinger of a coming storm. In the same scene (from The Two Towers) Grima Wormtongue tells Gandalf that "ill news is an ill guest".

Even when we most need to hear about approaching danger, human nature is to avoid dealing with trouble until we are faced with it, prepared or not. But heeding the stormcrow's "ill news" can help us plan for disaster and increase the odds of our household and community's survival when the worst happens.
